Hakama, Iaigi and Shitagi
Hakama and Iaigi
During the Edo period in Japan (1615-1868), members of the samurai or warrior class wore the kamishimo. The word literally means upper-lower (kami = upper, shimo = lower) and refers to the combination of the kataginu or stiff pleated vest and hakama or pleated trousers. The two garments were traditionally worn over a kimono for official or formal occasions. However, the kamishimo was eventually adopted by performers of traditional music and dance, especially in Kabuki theatre.
The hakama and iaigi pictured are the original items I made for my husband who has recently started practising Iaido at the Ken Yu Kan Dojo. I have so far made 4 similar garments for other students at his dojo and believe I have improved on the originals in both design and durability. The Hakama is made from a carefully selected poly cotton blend, which has the crispness of cotton, but the easy care qualities of polyester which makes it easier to wash and press. It will also hold its pleats time after time.
The sword bag was made with upholstery grade leather to ensure durability and provide good protection - the bokken and saya can be attached to the outside with Velco straps.
I have also made gi and under gi for other students. This is a hand made and tailored garment made to your measurements and not to be confused with cheap copies. If you are serious in your martial art, then this garment will provide pleasure in its wearing and allow you to focus on your art.
